Hey all!
Boogey is having some "fun" computer issues. I chalked it up to a dead hdd but we will see if I can get the new one working.
Original hdd had the bsod with a stop error. After restarting a few times to try to access safe mode. It gave a disk read error with only one option. Restart. I have only seen this with faulty drives.
We purchased a new IDE hdd and attempted a clean windows 7 install. But now we keep coming up with a media test failure, check cable. I assume this means a connection issue to either the DVD drive or the hdd itself. Both are detected under bios but I can't get the 7 disc to run for partitioning and install. Any suggestions before I start trial and error?

Attempted to re-connect all cables. Unplug unused cables (the data cables for the old hdd).
Succeeded in having boot sequence work correct now. Says booting from CD then goes to PXE and media test failure again.
I am at a .........after some more web browsing. I have semi-concluded that I am using an old IDE cable that is 44 conducter. Not the 80 conductor that the EIDE drive requires. Will update when I have tested this theory.
::edit::
After changing to an 80 conductor. This has not solved the problem. The media test failure, check cable error comes up still.
I am at a loss and unsure what to try at the moment. Help? =(. Boogey can't play!
::edit 2::
disabled the Onboard LAN boot rom and the onboard LAN. This has removed the PXE section of the error regarding the media test failure and am now getting the final response immediately after an attemPted cd boot. "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"
new hdd and new IDE cable. Was I wrong in suspecting a faulty drive with the original error? Is this now a motherboard issue??? Fack.

MM maybe he should bring his box over to your place, then you can jump on the WTF vent with a few of the guys and maybe they can help you and walk you through a few things. I mean you guys only live 1-2 streets away right? lafff

Streets? Lol. He is a 30 second walk in our complex! I only have the one monitor and no switch. I come onto WTF at night for a bit after tinkering. I'll ask when I jump in after work. Dont want to interrupt gameplay though. Besides! This post is a community effort to help one of your own! LOL. Brainstorm! =P bring in the Army!

so im on the mom's comp.. just wanted to drop by and say hi. Monarch can't figure out the problem yet.. and i have no idea what the hell could have happened.. i used it monday morning and everything was fine, just checked WTF and facebook and my hockey pool... left the comp on all day as i usually do and when i got home a blue screen telling me to restart my comp to fix some sort of problem came up, i had to run some backup file shit for liek 20 minutes and my hard drive apparently did not read anything so i had to go out and get a new one.. Monarch came with me and still nothing.. its so messed up, i dont really know what it could be.

make sure your made the new hdd a master slave by putting the pin jumpers to MS and the rest as a slave (this is assuming that the cd/dvd is also IDE) also make sure you have the hardrive on the IDE 1 plugin on Mobo (if cd/dvd is IDE also use separate cable and plugin it in on IDE 2 on Mobo. some IDE cable have a middle connector do not use that unless it unless you have more than one drive on the same ribbon, if that is the case use hardrives on IDE 1. main hardrive as master slave and it will go on the end of the ribbon and your spare drive will go in the middle, cd/dvd goes on IDE 2 as a master slave.)
next go in the bios and make sure the boot sequence is set to this.
1. cd/dvd rom
2. harddrive (if you have more than one make sure it is the master)
insert cd/dvd in rom and save and exit bios. (it is best to turn off flash logos at the begin of boot up so you can see if the drives are reconized, you can do this in the bios before you save and exit)
upon boot up get ready to press enter to install windows.
upon install the setup core files watch the core files as they install if you see it get stuck on a core file or taking a good deal of time installing a core file but it acts like it skip that core file and kept going with the install, then you have a different problem. (core files means the files that setup needs to install windows that will get removed after installation)
if some files didn't get installed during installed look and the windows cd or dvd at an angle on back on the disc for scratches or smudges. if there are smudges on the disc blow hot air on the disc and wipe side to side (don't wipe in circles)
try installation again and watch the core files, if it happens again try a different cd/dvd drive and a different install disc.
now why i say all this, everything i have research on your first error was relating to a bad harddrive going out at the begining and upon you installing the new drive you probably forgot to set the jumps on back of the harddrive and forgot to go in the bios and changed the boot up sequence to boot from cd/dvd rom, now you might say to your self i did all that and now i got the please install disk error, 1. you forgot to hit enter promptly when asked. 2. forgot to put dvd in there after you saved the changes. since i'm almost 100 percent sure you did put the cd or dvd in there and hit enter to install windows since you disable the boot lan rom thus is why i am think you got a bad core set files install either from the cd/dvd disk or the cd/dvd rom just isn't reading all the core files which i have seen very common to pop up the please insert disk error.
P.S. why you did right by disabling boot from lan rom but headless internet will not work unless you have the onboard lan enable

Thanks Panda! Out of your list here I have tried everything but disable the flash logos, set the Hdd to slave and try a new disc/DVD drive. I set the jumper to everything BUT slave lol. Single, cable select, master. All 3 of these. It is a single IDE cable For the hdd as the DVD drive is sata. Unfortunately after countless restarts and attempts, I get nothing indicating that it is attempting to install windows except for "attempt to boot from CD". If you are online tonight Panda, maybe we could chat via steam and troubleshoot?

go into the bios main page where it detect the drives and take a pic and upload it so i can see if it is recognizing the drives, you sure see 2 one in the cd/dvd rom and the other is the ide harddrive. it sounds like to me the cd/dvd rom is trying to install windows but it has nothing to put in on cause the bios isn't recognizing the ide harddrive. if that is the case you could have a bad ide header on your board, which is my next question if you have sata headers on your board why would use ide in the first place, lol, but if it is a bad ide header then see if you have a spare sata harddrive lying around and use it, the bios will auto dectect which is a master and which is a slave. if your able to install windows, then you have a bad ide header on your board which is no biggy cuase you need to a sata anyways cuase they are faster. :)
i'm always here, i just don't think you have added me to friends list, but headless has as i helped him with his wirless a few months back. but it would be better if you got in vent.

I will be home in about. 4.5-5 hours. If you're around then I can jump into vent. We purchased the IDE hdd because unfortunately it was the cheapst option at bestbuy. Canada computers next time. If we need to, I will take them to canada computers to buy a cheap sata. It would make sense that the IDE header is not functioning, only 1, but what doesn't make sense is that the hdd is detected. Will take a picture from phone when I get to his place and then come back to chat with ya and show you the detections.

Final Update!
Headless' computer is now up and running. The original problem is still apparently a problematic HDD, but the new HDD with the disc read error was, we assume, due to a faulty Windows Seven disc. He should be up on CS soon!. Woot!

you would be surprised. i've had HD's mysteriously "die" like that just to rise from the ashes with all data intact when i plugged it into a new system. i plugged in the old setup to figure out why the fuck that happened in the first place and it turns out i fucked up fine-tuning some heavy overclock settings and it somehow caused some BIOS issue.
anyway. i see you've fixed the problem. and now i have terabytes of storage space. looks like a win-win situation to me
